LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) has announced expansion to Las Vegas with a new team for the 2020 season.

The Las Vegas Legends’ women’s team will play their inaugural season with the WPSL in the Desert Division.

The first three home games of their season will be played at Peter Johann Field at UNLV, with the remaining game locations announced at a later date.

“We are excited to join the WPSL,” said Meir Cohen, president and founder of the 18-year-old Las Vegas men's soccer club. “The addition of a WPSL team to our men’s team model means our local female players will have a complete player development pathway. It also allows us to provide Las Vegas Valley-based players with an opportunity to play at the adult level and compete around the U.S. while also supplying some a pathway to the professional ranks.”

The new expansion team will be overseen by Daniel Collazo, general manager of Las Vegas Legends FC and Katie Greener, assistant general manager of the women’s team.

A Las Vegas native and former player in the WPSL, Greener joins the soccer club after working with both the Vegas Golden Knights and Las Vegas Aviators.

“A competitive women’s team,” Greener stated, “is something that has been missing in this city and I want to do all I can to help.” Collazo added, “we have been able to create a very competitive and entertaining men’s team and are equally confident that our women’s team will have those qualities as well.” Daughters of owner Meir Cohen, Maya and Noa, will also assist in the team’s management.

The Legends will play home and away games against teams from El Paso, Tx., Tucson and Phoenix, Az.

The winner of the Desert Division will advance to play in the Pac South Championship match.

Playoffs continue onto the West Region Final Four and then onto the National Championship Final Four.

The season begins at the end of May with preseason action earlier in the month leading up to the first official home opener.

Announcements on the coaching staff and tryout dates are to be released later this month.
