In celebration of the 50th Year of Rebel Football, UNLV will wear a special helmet during its season-opening game versus Howard University Sept. 2.
The silver helmet will feature a decal in the same font that the team wore from 1982-86 but without the middle striping because of the current squad’s “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sticker located on the back.
Head coach Tony Sanchez put his own spin on the throwback look by making both the “Rebels” script and facemask chrome colored instead of simple red.
Wearing a similar look, the 1984 Rebels were led by future College Football Hall of Famer Randall Cunningham at quarterback and punter. That UNLV squad went undefeated in league play to win the Big West Conference and went on to defeat Toledo 30-13 in the California Bowl held in Fresno.
This year’s team will also wear a commemorative sticker on the back of its helmets throughout the season featuring the official 50 Years of Rebel Football logo designed as a courtesy by Mike Mason of CatalystCreativ.
