LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Thousands of valley residents are looking for work. And it's important you dress to impress when interviewing for that next position. But don't stress out if you can't afford a new outfit. 13 Action News anchor Tricia Kean spoke with a local expert who says you don't have to spend a dime to look your best.
WEARING THE SAME THING
"I really was just overwhelmed in my own closet. I walk in and I felt like I was wearing the same thing every day," says valley resident Caitlin Shea.
She had a closet full of clothes, but nothing felt inspiring.
"I need to go to the store. I need to go get something else to zhuzh this up a little bit," says Caitlin.
RIGHT OUTFIT IS ON YOUR HANGERS
Local stylist, Kim Groberg, says not so fast. The right outfit is probably right on your own hangers.
"80% of the things in the average women's closet they never wear," says Kim, who is Owner and Founder of High Style for a Hundred.
WOMEN WEARING ONLY 20% OF THEIR CLOTHES
The average woman is wearing less than a quarter of what she owns. Kim recently helped Caitlin discover an all-new wardrobe. And you can too!
Start by putting aside five to ten outfits you wear all the time. Then get rid of all the clothes in your closet that don't fit you.
WHERE WAS THAT?
"What you want to do next is take a look at what else is in there... Often times I'll find things in my clients' closets and they say, where was that? I didn't even know I had that," says Kim.
This is the point where you want to start creating new outfits. Kim says you can start with something as simple as your favorite white t-shirt or blouse.
"You have a fabulous necklace. You have your white tee underneath. Another way you can do it again is with a scarf. This is great for a Zoom call or great for an interview," says Kim.
ACCESSORIZE
It's a concept that Caitlin says works.
"I feel like I have 500 different things to wear now. One shirt can look five different ways depending on how you wear it and what you wear with it," says Caitlin.
"Accessories is one of the best ways to take your outfit to the next level," says Kim.
Just make sure those accessories are within sight. Kim says they typically won't be worn if hidden away in a box or storage bin. Be sure to also keep your closet organized.
CATEGORIZE YOUR CLOSET
"You can either categorize by color or categorize by silhouette. So put all your jackets together. Put all your blouses together, all your sweaters, your bottoms. Then it makes it very easy for you to wardrobe an outfit," says Kim.
Caitlin tells her girlfriends to try it for themselves and they'll be surprised by the results.
"It's super important I think right now to be cognizant of saving money and making sure you know you have great things literally right at your fingertips. You don't have to spend a million dollars to look like a million bucks," says Caitlin.
