Building a better healthcare system

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — High drug prices aren't the only major concern when it comes to a better healthcare system.

Dr. Martin Gaynor from Carnegie Mellon University says the consolidation of hospitals in the last two decades allows major health systems to take advantage of market power.

He also says lawmakers need to get rid of regulations that make it hard to build competition – such as expanding the laws on what nurse practitioners and pharmacists can perform.

Gaynor also suggests creating an agency to monitor the healthcare system, with access to national data from private and public health plans.
