LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — In celebration of Nevada Reading Week, barbershops across Las Vegas are doing what they can to encourage child literacy.

Masterpiece Barber College is offering free hair cuts if their school-aged clients read to them.

This initiative began four years ago after the late Assemblyman Tyrone Thompson had an idea to improve youth literacy.

While Nevada Reading Week is only once a year, those inside Masterpiece Barber College are committed to keeping the momentum going for a lifetime.

From 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday, children will receive free haircuts at Masterpiece Barber College if they read to their barber.

Then on Saturday, the event continues from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Masterpiece Barber College is located at 3510 E. Bonanza Road, Suite 150.
