LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — On Aug. 27, Trooper Rafael Rodriguez Jr. was awarded the Nevada Department of Public Safety’s highest honor for his actions on June 1, 2020.

On June 1, Trooper Rodriguez responded to a call for service to reports of a female hanging on the outside fencing of the US95 and Russell overpass.

When Trooper Rodriguez arrived he encountered a female who was suffering from a mental crisis, and was on the outside fencing over the US95.

Trooper Rodriguez disregarded his own personal safety and climbed the fencing over the US95 to reach the female.

During his interaction, Trooper Rodriguez built a rapport with the distressed female and when the time was right he handcuffed the female to the fence so she could not fall.

The Henderson Fire Department responded to the scene with a ladder truck and was able to safely remove the female from the overpass.

Trooper Rafael Rodriguez’s actions went far above and beyond the call duty and for his actions that night he was awarded the Medal of Valor by the Colonel of the Nevada Highway Patrol, Colonel Dan Solow.
