UPDATE: Boris was laid to rest on Aug. 15.

ORIGINAL STORY

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its officers.

According to a Facebook post, one of their K9 officers named Boris passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday.

Boris and his handler, LVMPD Officer DuWayne Layton, participated in a search around 5 a.m., and the dog died a few hours later.

Boris was nearly 11 years old and was supposed to retire soon to a 2.5-acre estate in Washington.

LVMPD says that Boris loved his job as a crime fighter and loved to make special appearances such as visiting students at Marc Kahre Elementary School.

Funeral arrangements for Boris have not been announced. Most police dogs are buried at Craig Road Pet Cemetary.

Nicky was the last known K9 to die in the line of duty. Nicky was killed by friendly fire on March 31, 2016, during a running gun battle with a homicide suspect.
