LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — A new school is opening in the Las Vegas area on Monday explicitly designed for middle school girls.

The Girls Athletic Leadership School in Las Vegas, also known as GALS Las Vegas, was founded by Executive Director Jennifer McCloskey, a mother who felt her daughters were being overlooked in class.

As a result, McCloskey says she wanted to start a school that focuses on giving special attention to young girls.

"It helps them find their voice in middle school," she explained, "learn self-advocacy, learn leadership skills, and be active leaders in our community.

135 students have already enrolled.

Over the next three years, McCloskey said they are hoping to have at least 400 girls enrolled.

Right now students have an option of learning online or going into the Boys and Girls Club of Southern Nevada near Flamingo and Maryland to do their school work.

There are Plexiglas barriers in place at the Boys and Girls Club for social distancing.
