It is almost that time of year again. The annual Las Vegas Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas is upon us and this year will be extra special.

2016 marks 50 years of Star Trek and more than 100 celebrity guests will be attending this year's convention from Aug. 3-7 at the Rio hotel-casino.

This year's lineup of stars includes: William Shatner, Whoopi Goldberg, Kirstie Alley, George Takei, Kate Mulgrew, Scott Bakula, Nichelle Nichols, Jeri Ryan, Walter Koenig, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, Michael Dorn, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton, Denise Crosby, Gates McFadden, James Darren, Robert Picardo, Garrett Wang, Tim Russ, Terry Farrell, Armin Shimerman, Nicole de Boer, Robert Beltran, Nana Visiot, Rene Auberjonois, Connor Trinneer, Dominic Keating, Robert Duncan McNeill, Ethan Phillips, Anthony Montgomery, John de Lancie and many more.

As usual, there will be vendor rooms filled with merchandise, multiple panel discussions, autograph sessions, a special tribute to Leonard Nimoy, Quark's Happy Hour, the Commander's Evening Dinner Party, Klingon Karaoke, costume parade and costume contests, trivia games, Captain's Chair Dance Party, 50th anniversary non-minimum bid auction, tribute to Gene Rodenberry, and a performance by the Star Trek Rat Pack.

Thousands of diehard fans attend the convention each year. Tickets for this year's convention sold out almost immediately.

The first Star Trek aired in 1966 and probably would have been discontinued after 2 seasons if it weren't for its rabid fans.

Since then, it has become one of the most successful entertainment franchises in the world with additional TV series, movies, books and merchandise
