HENDERSON (KTNV) — Sankofa, Nevada State College’s newest student program designed to support the retention and recruitment of Black students, announced it’s accepting applications for its Summer Bridge Program.

The program, held in the summer before the school year begins, provides high school juniors and seniors as well as incoming Nevada State freshmen an opportunity to learn skills that will help them academically succeed during their first year at Nevada State College.

Accepted applicants will receive a $250 stipend for participation and a $2,500 scholarship should they decide to attend Nevada State.

Nevada State College, which experienced a 90% increase in African-American student enrollment last year, is excited to launch its inaugural Sankofa Summer Bridge.

The program is designed to support:

  • Academic success strategies
  • Socio-emotional supports
  • Financial literacy
  • Opportunities to explore Black Las Vegas history

Rooted in social justice and community advocacy, Sankofa offers students the opportunity to engage in mentorship, receive academic support and participate in social activities offered by Black faculty and staff, community leaders and other Nevada State College members. In addition, the program partners with local Black organizations such as Collegiate 100, NAACP as well as local fraternities and sororities who provide leadership and academic success tips for Black students.

Nevada State College also offers another Summer Bridge Program through Nepantla, a student support program for first-generation college students.
