If you follow a gluten-free diet, there are a handful of things you can’t eat — many of which are desserts, as many contain wheat flour or other gluten-containing grains.

One sweet treat that has been off-limits for those who are gluten-free is Oreo cookies, but that is about to change. The cookie will soon be available in two new gluten-free varieties: classic Oreo and Double Stuf!

Nabisco announced the new cookie on Twitter in November 2020, saying it will hit stores beginning in January 2021. Now, you can pre-order the 13- to 14-ounce full-size packages from Walmart, which are scheduled for shipment on Jan. 19. Head over to Walmart’s website to pre-order the cookies.

Some fans who need a wheat-free option have expressed their delight on Twitter, including @TheJGSIntern, who wrote, “as someone who recently discovered she has Celiac…I’ve not been able to indulge in this absolutely delicious cookie!!”

Others expressed concerns about different allergens, including @Dreamer_E3, who wrote, “I’m trying not to get too hype because I have a soy and nut allergy on top of having celiac.”

While this is the first time Oreos have been gluten-free, many other bakeries make gluten-free cookies that you can buy at the store. Kinnikinnick Foods has gluten-free chocolate sandwich cream cookies, which are similar to an Oreo, as well as fudge sandwich creme cookies and vanilla sandwich creme cookies, which are similar to a Golden Oreo.

There are other gluten-free cookies on the market as well, including Birthday Cake Creme Cookies by Goodie Girl, which you can find at Target, and the brand Pamela’s has gluten-free chocolate chip cookies in stores nationwide. If you have an Aldi near you, you can also find Simply Nature Coconut Cashew Crisps in chocolate, sea salt caramel and vanilla, which are gluten-free, paleo and vegan.

Amazon also has dozens of gluten-free cookies from brands like Tate’s Bake Shop, Enjoy Life and Simple Mills.

You can also bake your own gluten-free cookies, as all you’ll need is gluten-free flour, plus other ingredients depending on what flavor of cookie is your favorite.

Are you excited to try Oreo’s new gluten-free cookies when they hit store shelves next year?
