LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — During the pandemic we've heard countless stories about restaurants that are struggling or have even been forced to close their doors.
Tonight's We're Open is exactly the opposite of that.
It is the story of a father and son duo who have during the pandemic now opened their second restaurant together.
Life in the restaurant business for the Sord family starts with a picture in 1959.
This is John Sord in his Chicago restaurant called The Candlelight Lodge.
That same picture now hangs proudly in his son's newest restaurant, one Bryan Sord opened with his own son Nicholas -- The Boston Fish House & Bar in Tivoli Village near Summerlin
They took the time to hang that picture up together.
"I put my dad right in the middle of the restaurant so he can oversee everybody," Bryan Sord said.
Running a restaurant even during good times is tough let alone during a pandemic with limits on capacity and social distance requirements.
Sord has now opened two restaurants during the pandemic.
"I think we're the only ones in the country who did this to open two restaurants during the pandemic. I wasn't scared to do it," Sord said.
The father and son team first opened Sunny Side up nearby in Boca Park just about a week before the statewide shut down.
They managed to survive that and came out it thinking more is possible.
"People kind of said wow you're doing this during a pandemic, but I feel I feel great doing this no hesitation whatsoever," Sord said.
Perhaps his lack of hesitation is tied back to his legacy.
