NEW YORK — Inmates at a federal detention center in New York City were overjoyed after the electricity and heat were restored following a week-long power outage during extremely cold weather.
The National Weather Service said the temperatures this week have been in the teens overnight.
ABC 13 Eyewitness News reports that inmates have been using pots, pans, and flashlights to bang on their cell windows, even spelling out their message on walls that it was not okay.
Their conditions sparked protests at the facility this weekend. The Justice Department says it will work with the Bureau of Prisons to find out exactly what happened, and it wants to get a system in place to make sure this situation never happens again.
