A woman was struck and killed by a train near Las Vegas Saturday morning.

Around 6 a.m., a Union Pacific locomotive hit the woman who sustained fatal injuries. She was identified as 51-year-old Karla Velavquez of Las Vegas. The Clark County coroner ruled her death a suicide.

The incident occurred along the Caliente Subdivision near Apex.

No other injuries were reported and the cause of the incident is currently under investigation.

Union Pacific released a statement in regards to the incident.

"Our hearts go out to friends and family of the deceased.

The safety message here is that pedestrians, and everyone, need to be very aware of the hazards associated with trains and should never be on the train tracks or attempt to cross anywhere other than at a designated crossing when signs and signals permit and without first looking both ways.

Our locomotive engineer and conductor were immediately put in touch with peer counselors who are also locomotive engineers and conductors as part of our 'Peer Support' program."
