Weekend break-in causing concern at marijuana dispensaries

A weekend break-in at a marijuana dispensary is causing concern for other businesses.

Most dispensaries operate as cash-only businesses because pot is still considered a controlled substance under federal law. Therefore, banks shy away from working with dispensaries.

Despite high-security protocol required under state and city regulations, four men were able to break into the Blackjack Collective marijuana dispensary Saturday morning.

According to police, a private security company was monitoring surveillance camera footage as the burglary was in process. Police responded quickly, eventually apprehending all four suspects.

While the surveillance cameras helped police make an arrest, 13 Action News Crime and Safety Expert and retired Las Vegas police Lt. Randy Sutton said on-site security guards are ideal.

"The security monitoring reports the crime. Security on the scene hopefully prevents the crime. That's the difference," Sutton said.

Management of Blackjack Collective declined repeated requests for comment.
