UNLV arena renovations show growth in area

Posted

UNLV's Thomas & Mack Center has earned a reputation for being one of the highest grossing venues of its kind. Now, it's getting a much needed facelift.

It's been more than 15 years since UNLV's Thomas & Mack Center has received any major updates, and now the area's most famous arena is revealing their $72.5 million overhaul, with modern upgrades and renovations fit for a president, literally.

The center will continue to not only host university athletic events, but also rodeos and presidential debates.

The overhaul includes a two-story, 35,000-square-foot meeting and events space with views of the Las Vegas Strip, building systems and facility wide upgrades, renovated concession stands, four ADA-accessible platforms, and elevator access to the upper bowl.

County officials say the renovations show just how much growth the area has had in recent years.

"I think this is symbolic of the resurgence of what's happening in Clark County and Las Vegas," says Clark County Commissioner Steve Sisolak.  "The economy is coming back, so for the first time we've had a chance to do some improvements on our campuses, and that's a great thing."

The university hopes to have the project done in the fall, just in time for the final presidential debate in October.
