Las Vegas toddler who drowned in backyard pool identified

UPDATE APRIL 10: The toddler who drowned in a backyard pool on April 6 has been identified as 1-year-old Liam Martinez of Las Vegas.

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) -- Tragedy struck a neighborhood near Lake Mead and Jones just after 2:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon. Las Vegas police received a call about a toddler who fell into a backyard swimming pool and drowned.

Medics responded to the home in the 1900 block of Smith Street near Lake Mead and Jones boulevards. They immediately treated the toddler on scene and transported the child to a local hospital. However, the toddler could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's abuse and neglect detectives are handling the investigation.

"As pool season approaches, it's important to remind all parents and caretakers of small children of the importance of utilizing proper safety and an abundance of caution when it comes to small children in the area of polls and hots tubs," said Lt. Bill Steinmetz.

According to the Southern Nevada Health District, the number of drownings among children under the age of four totaled five last year. In 2017, eight children under the age of four drowned.
