On Sunday, the Society of Military Widows, along with Santa and several biker volunteers, held an event to help support military families who lost their loved ones.

Barbette Kellner, a mother of two, lost her husband Commander Kevin Kellner of the US.Navy around Thanksgiving time.

“It's almost the two year anniversary since he died, ” Kellner said.

During the holidays, emotions are especially raw.

"It’s about finding the new normal; that's what we call it… the new normal.”

Kellner said her 8-year-old son often says, “He wants to visit daddy in heaven. Where I told him he was. And he doesn't understand; he can't come back down after her goes back up.”

For young kids, it's especially difficult to comprehend the loss of a parent, so events like this help, support the kids who enjoy coming.

“If it weren’t for organizations like this, I don’t think we would have made it,” Kellner said.
