Police were investigating a suspicious device Tuesday evening.

Around 7 p.m., a man called police saying a small device exploded in his hands in the 5800 block of West Lake Mead Boulevard, near Jones Boulevard. He was sent to UMC Trauma for treatment on non-life threatening injuries.

Police said they have determined the man was trying to make his own fireworks when the explosion happened.

Firefighters said the man lit the fuse inside and then tried to make it outside but didn't make it.

No word on whether the firework was legal, however, safe-n-sane fireworks are only legal in Las Vegas between June 28 and July 4.

Police initially said there might be a second device on property but could not find an initial device.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's armored unit was investigating.

The immediate area has been evacuated until it is deemed safe.
