Oscar best picture nominee 'The Irishman' ties to Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — The Oscar nominee for best picture is one of the most talked about categories on the list.

The nominees this year are "The Joker," "Little Women," "1917," "Parasite," "Marriage Story," "Once Upon Time In Hollywood," "Ford V Ferrari," "Jojo Rabbit" and "The Irishman."

Since it's Netflix release, The Irishman has been a hot button topic in Las Vegas.

The mob drama follows the rise, fall and disappearance of union leader Jimmy Hoffa and the hit man who claims he killed him.

Following the release of the film, the Mob Museum held a panel discussion of experts who studied the case to debunk misconceptions.

It was there, Hoffa's ties to Las Vegas were revealed.

"Jimmy Hoffa was very well known in Las Vegas in the 1960, he was very involved in giving loans to casinos to expand or build new casinos in Las Vegas. He was very well liked," Geoff Schumacher, Mob Museum senior director of content.

13 Action News is celebrating the 92nd Academy Awards with stories related to the film industry this week. The Oscars will air on KTNV-TV Channel 13 at 5 p.m. Sunday.
