The driver of a minivan has critical injuries after a crash near Sandy Valley Tuesday afternoon.

The crash was reported around 3 p.m. in the 3100 block of Sandy Valley Road.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to the head-on crash between a Ford minivan and a Ford Explorer. Police said the minivan was traveling southbound on Sandy Valley Road and crossed over into oncoming traffic, hitting the Explorer.

The driver of the minivan was extricated and flown to University Medical Center. The driver remains in critical condition.

Police had originally reported that the driver of the minivan, 37-year-old Eliazar Torres-Perez of Sandy Valley, had died but later said he was critical.

An investigation revealed that the minivan driver was not wearing a seatbelt and had open alcohol containers in the vehicle. The occupants of the Explorer did not show signs of impairment.

The Explorer driver and passenger, both from Jean, were taken to the hospital but did not sustain serious injuries.
