Two married, off-duty Nevada Highway Patrol Troopers assisted Las Vegas firefighters during a 2-alarm fire that damaged three apartments and displaced 18 people.

Firefighters were called to the scene near Washington Avenue and Rainbow Boulevard around 8:15 a.m. Saturday. When they arrived, they saw heavy flames coming from three apartments of a 2-story wood frame apartment building. After calling for a second alarm, firefighters were able to get the fire under control within 30 minutes.

Troopers Joseph and Trissa DellaBella, both 15-year veterans of NHP, helped six occupants escape from the building. Joseph went after a lady who returned to her smoke-filled home to rescue a pet, and was able to rescue her and the dog. Meanwhile, Trissa evacuated other apartments and collected fire extinguishers.

Trooper Joe was later taken to the hospital to be checked for smoke inhalation.

Firefighters were able to rescue and resuscitate a dog, which was taken to Lone Mountain Animal Hospital for more treatment. The dog is in critical condition.

Neighbors also rescued a teen from a 2nd story window before firefighters arrived. She was not hurt.

Fire officials estimate damage at $100,000. The cause of the fire has not been determined.

Southern Nevada American Red Cross will assist 6 adults and 12 children displaced by the fire.
