As temperatures remain at or near 100 degrees for the next several months, NV Energy has offered some no-cost tips to reduce your monthly energy bill by 10 to 25 percent.
- Turn off lights and appliances when not in use. Unplug your televisions, computers, DVD and DVR players when on vacation.
- Set your water heater to 120 degrees.
- Dirt absorbs light, so keep lights and lighting fixtures clean.
- Vacuum your refrigerator coils (underneath and in the back). Also, don't obstruct the coils as they need air space to work.
- Cook and use your dishwasher and clothes washer/dryer as late in the evening as possible.
- Set your thermostat to 78-80 degrees when home and 5 to 10 degrees warmer at night or when not at home.
- Keep your freezer full. You can even place containers or plastic bottles filled with water into any empty spaces
- If your A/C unit is on the ground, keep the area around it clean and free of obstructions to maintain airflow.
- Allow dishes to air dry in your dishwasher rather than using the heated option.
- Keep the reflectors underneath stove-top burners clean.
