Due to recent consecutive days with high temperatures and nights that also stayed warm, NV Energy customers last week set a new all-time record demand for electricity that shattered a record set on July 5, 2007.
A new peak demand of 6,124 megawatts was achieved during the 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. hour on July 28.
That is 258 megawatts higher than a longstanding record of 5,866 megawatts that was set on July 5, 2007 when high temperatures at McCarran Airport were recorded at 114 degrees Fahrenheit.
A megawatt is enough energy to serve approximately 600 homes in southern Nevada.
NV Energy also utilized its successful demand response service, PowerShift Smart Thermostat, to significantly lower customer demand.
