Americans are buying more guns than ever before.

The FBI says it conducted more than 3.5 million gun-related background checks last month and marks a 20% increase over the same period last year.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation, which cross-references checks with actual purchases, says more guns were sold last month than any April on record.

Industry observers say fears about looming gun control legislation and rising crime rates are fueling the spike in gun sales.
