Clinton, Trump claims put to the truth-o-meter

Posted

Donald Trump is under the microscope after saying he likes to keep his philanthropy to veterans private, and Hillary Clinton said her use of a private email server as Secretary of State was allowed. On Thursday, Politifact put these claims to the truth-o-meter.

"It was allowed," Clinton said in an interview.

Hillary Clinton said a recent audit proves she was allowed to use a private email server during her time as Secretary of State.

PolitiFact dug deeper, finding the State Department told an independent inspector general that if she had asked, they would not have allowed it.  The concern?  Sensitive and classified information could have been compromised.

"Hillary Clinton was putting a ton of spin on this issue. And the report does not say what she says it says," Politifact's Katie Sanders said.

"The press should be ashamed of themselves,"  Trump said in a press conference.

This was Trump's response over  questions about what happened to the $6 million Trump claimed he raised the night he backed out of a January Fox News debate in Iowa, and scheduled a rival fundraising event for veterans instead. Trump saying up until now the delay was because: "I wanted to keep it private, because I don't think it's anybody's business if I want to send money to the vets," he said.

PolitiFact looked at Trump's claim of wanting to be low-key, but finding high-profile check presentations, tweets and soundbites with Trump being very transparent about the fundraiser back then.

"This was not an under the radar thing," Sanders said.

Trump called the press conference after journalists started asking questions about where the money went. Trump pointed to the nearly $6 million he raised for veterans from that night, including $1 million he donated in a check last week.
