LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Monsoon 2019 officially begins on June 15 and runs through September 30.
The monsoon is a seasonal shift in the weather pattern across the Desert Southwest that sets the stage for humid air to be sent north from the Gulf of California and the Gulf of Mexico.
Once this humid air reaches Southern Nevada, it encourages pop-up thunderstorms, which can lead to heavy rain, flash flooding, strong wind gusts, dangerous lightning, and occasionally even hail.
Even when we don't see storms, stretches of increased humidity make it harder for our bodies to keep cool.
The heart of the monsoon is really mid-July through mid-September, so we may remain storm-free for another month.
Enjoy that dry heat while it's here!
