LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Memorial Day Weekend is usually the official kickoff for Las Vegas pool parties. However, this year, a short drive up Mt. Charleston gave an entirely different experience.
May is almost over, but the snow hasn't melted yet up in the mountains. There was even fresh snow on the ground - which is not typical for this time of year.
Hikers were bringing extra gloves and other winter gear just in case they needed it later on.
For families who have been looking for a chance to enjoy an extended winter, this was their day.
Priscilla Mena took her entire family to Mount Charleston. She says they don't usually travel to the mountain, but did so after seeing the snow.
"Honestly I couldn't sleep last night, and I saw that it snowed up here," Mena said.
At a time when Nevada is supposed to be seeing warmer temperatures, the family took this as their opportunity to get to enjoy the mountains finally.
"They've wanted to come so we've been driving around looking for snow, Mena said.
Currently, locals are taking advantage of the cooler days before the triple-digit temperatures arrive.
