One person was displaced after an apartment fire, apparently started either on or near a mattress.
Las Vegas Fire & Rescue responded to an apartment fire in the 6600 block of Bromley Avenue, near U.S. 95 and Jones Boulevard, at 5:40 p.m. Tuesday.
On arrival light smoke was showing from a downstairs apartment in a two-story wood frame apartment building. Firefighters had to force entry into the apartment and found it full of thick smoke, but minor heat and no flames.
A mattress was smoldering in a bedroom, the source of the smoke. Firefighters were able to get the mattress outside quickly through a window and extinguish it.
The smoke filled the entire apartment. The mattress was damaged by the fire. Damage was estimated at $1,000.
The cause of the fire is undetermined, starting at or near the mattress. Smoking material was found all around the apartment and Las Vegas Fire & Rescue said careless smoking could not be ruled out.
The only occupant of the apartment arrived home while firefighters were cleaning up. The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced adult.
There were no reported injuries.
