UPDATE: The driver has been identified as Krystal Hight. Hight was arrested on Monday. Hight admitted to police that she fled the scene of this crash. The victim has been identified as 37-year-old Anthony John Maida.

ORIGINAL STORY:

A 37-year-old North Las Vegas man riding a motorized scooter was killed in a crash Sunday morning.

Police say it happened around 8 a.m., as the scooter was leaving an apartment complex called Silos at Flamingo Road near Pecos Road.

The man on the scooter pulled out into east bound traffic on Flamingo, when a Hyundai Sonata slammed into him. Witnesses tell police the car was speeding recklessly, weaving in and out of traffic.

The rider was then thrown from the scooter and died on scene.

Witnesses tell police the car drove off, but then crashed into a median about a block down the road. They told police that the driver got out of the car and ran off, but a female passenger stuck around.  She was sent to the hospital and is being questioned by police in their search for the person that was behind the wheel.

Members of this community are not shocked. One man even told 13 Action News that he almost got hit on his scooter at the same intersection.

"It goes to show people don't really pay attention to the road," said Avery Valera. "A couple of times I almost got hit while crossing the street."

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has investigated 31 fatal accidents this year. Sgt. Richard Strader expressed his frustration to 13 Action News while on the scene of the crash.

"When you see this poor guy that's laying out here on the road, he has a family," said Strader. "They're going to be grieving for him now."

Flamingo Road was closed for hours between Pecos and Mojave roads.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555.
