As terror unfolded in the French city of Nice, a local restaurant owner was experiencing his own terror.

Jonathan Pluvinet is originally from Nice, and now lives in Las Vegas.

He owns Rosallie, Le French Cafe on South Rainbow nearly 6,000 miles away from his family.

On Thursday night, he was desperately trying to reach out to his family, knowing they were celebrating Bastille Day in the streets of Nice at the same time as chaos.

"I didn't know what to do because I'm here and you kind of feel like you can't do much," says Pluvinet.

French authorities say a 31-year-old man driving a truck plowed into a group of people celebrating, killing over 80 of them.

Pluvinet called his family and checked social media, until he finally learned his family was safe.

Now, he's left heartbroken for his home country, after the attack happened during a day everyone should have been celebrating.

"Now it just makes it even worse to attend such a beautiful event," says Pluvinet.
