Uh-oh. This is not the kind of news that we like to hear. Las Vegas workers are earning 13 percent less than the national average.

Las Vegas' economy is based on tourism and we are known for our hotels, our restaurants and our malls. Most of the residents of the valley work in the service industry (almost 16 percent). That includes almost 41,000 people in retail, 32,000 waiters or waitresses, 25,000 janitors, cleaners or maids, 24,000 cashiers, and 22,000 restaurant workers.

The average worker in Las Vegas earned $20.23 per hour in May 2015, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That is 13 percent below the U.S. average of $23.23 per hour.
