LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Las Vegas police have opened a homicide investigation into the death of a man who was found on a sidewalk near UNLV early Tuesday morning.

UPDATE: On Jan. 9, 2023, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police announced an update in this case. They say 33-year-old Christopher Martell, a man accused in multiple stabbing attacks on homeless people in this area, was identified as a suspect. Read an updated report here.

Homicide detectives say they were called to an area near the intersection of University Avenue and Escondido Street at about 7:30 a.m. for reports of a man found dead.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Homicide Lt. Raymond Spencer said the man was a known homeless person who would sleep in the area and he was known to be alive at least around 3 a.m. Tuesday.

However, the man in his 40s was then found stabbed to death a few hours later and police are continuing their investigation as to what happened between those hours.
