UPDATE NOV. 8: The Clark County coroner has released the name of the boy killed by his father on Nov. 2. His name is Giovanni Melton and he was 14 years old.
UPDATE NOV. 6: The arrest report for the man accused of killing his son in Henderson has been released.
According to the report, Wendell Melton rented an apartment for his 14-year-old son Giovanni because his son and his new wife did not get along.
Giovanni had lived there alone since March.
Melton was checking on Giovanni the day of the shooting because Giovanni did not go to school that day. The pair began arguing and Giovanni reportedly pushed his father to the ground.
Melton told police that he had a gun with him because he was afraid of some of the people that Giovanni hangs out with.
Melton says that after he got up off the ground, he warned Giovanni to stay back. However, Giovanni moved to attack him.
Melton says that his finger was on the trigger but the shooting was an accident.
Police say that Melton's version of what happened changed several times and he was untruthful about where the gun came from until evidence contradicted his statements.
Police arrested Melton because they believe he pulled the gun on his son before he believed himself to be in danger.
UPDATE NOV. 5: Friends of the teenager reportedly killed by his father held a memorial for him on Sunday night.
UPDATE NOV. 3 11 PM: Those close to the 14-year-old killed at a Henderson condo complex have identified him as Giovanni Melton.
A woman who considers herself his foster mother after taking Giovanni and his older brother in when they were kicked out of the house, said his father did not like the fact the 14-year-old was gay.
Sonja Jones said the boys told her, Melton had once pulled a gun on the 14-year-old after finding him with a boyfriend.
Jones said the boys mother has not been a part of their lives for some time.
She has launched a Go Fund Me page to help Melton's older brother with expenses related to his funeral.
