Rodent droppings and other damage found on Las Vegas middle school campus

There are rat droppings in the janitor's office and that was just the beginning of what inspectors found at Cadwallader Middle School near Elkhorn and Buffalo.

Contact 13 first reported the presence of rats on campus last week.

Newly released documents from the Southern Nevada Health District reveal how the rats managed to get into the school.

Inspectors noticed the rodents had chewed a small hole in a plastic sweep guard under an exterior cafeteria door.

Once inside, inspectors found rat feces in a janitorial area.

As a precaution, school staff has placed school snacks and other food into plastic bins to prevent rodent tampering.

Further inspection outside revealed overgrown vegetation as a possible hideout for the rodents.

Inspectors ordered the immediate removal of the overgrown plants, the removal of any food sources, such as trash, and ordered exterior holes to be fixed.

The Clark County School District says no one has been hurt by the rodents and they are training staff to use live capture traps to rid the campus of the rodents.
