A recent cold snap has brought temperatures the Las Vegas valley has not seen in while and plumbers are warning desert dwellers to take precautions to avoid costly repairs.

Gary Eisenhauer with The Sunny Plumber says freezing temperatures can wreak havoc with exposed pipes and hose bibbs on the exterior of homes.

"The pressure vacuum breaker is the most susceptible [during a freeze] and any exposed pipe, you should wrap it," explained Eisenhauer.

Eisenhauer says irrigation systems are also at risk and suggests wrapping exposed pipes with foam insulation available at most home improvement stores.

Eisenhauer says big towels or blankets can be an inexpensive alternative.

"If you don't, you run the risk of pipes freezing and when the pipe freezes, you're going to have a big water bill, and you have to pay someone to fix it," said Eisenhauer.

Isolated snow showers are possible in some parts of the valley through Friday, according to forecasts.
