LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — A homemade barbecue is to blame for a fire that damaged two east Las Vegas homes and displaced seven people, officials say.
Las Vegas and Clark County firefighters responded to a fire near Eastern Avenue and Oakey Boulevard around 10:15 p.m. on June 16.
When crews arrived, two houses were on fire.
A covered patio of a house on Bonita Avenue was on fire as well as the outside wall of the house next door.
Investigators believe a homemade barbecue on the patio is most likely what started the fire.
An occupant told authorities the barbecue was used earlier.
Damage is estimated at $50,000 between the two properties.
Two people, one of the occupants and a neighbor, tried putting out the fire with a garden hose before firefighters arrived. Officials say they both suffered smoke inhalation.
They were treated on scene and refused to be transported to the hospital.
The American Red Cross is assisting six adults and one teen that are displaced by the fire.
