An 11-year-old boy from Summerlin is recovering from a traumatic brain injury after he was hit by a car while biking to school.

Alex Wigg was biking to school April 27 when he was hit by a car.

"It sounds odd, but I was hoping for a broken leg," said his mom, Jena Antonchuk.

Wigg's injury was much worse. He suffered a skull fracture and swelling in the brain, but his mom said the helmet he was wearing saved his life.

"Even though I made my son wear that helmet every single day, I did think "Oh no, that could never happen to me," she said.

She now wants to make sure it doesn't happen to other families. She wants Nevada to pass a state law requiring young kids to wear helmets on bikes.

"There are plenty of children who do not wear helmets," she said.

Wigg was released from the intensive care unit and is recovering from home.
