The valley's future doctors start classes Monday, at UNLV's new School of Medicine. 60 new students will begin medical school, and that could mean dozens of new doctors for the valley.
The students were selected partly because of their ties to Nevada, and officials are hoping many of them will stay in the area after graduation.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the national average is 272 physicians for every 100,000 people. However, Nevada only has 198 physicians per 100,000 people.
Nevada has consistently ranked towards the bottom when it comes to health care, and that's something UNLV is hoping to change.
