LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Women have a few opportunities to arm themselves with self defense knowledge at no cost this week.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is hosting a women's safety training on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Summerlin Area Command Center.
If you'd like to double down and learn how to physically fight off a potential threat, Nomad Krav Maga will host a free women's self defense class on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
All women over the age of 15 are welcome. Organizers ask that you show up 15 minutes early with a bottle of water and workout clothing.
Tammy Jones has been a student at Nomad Krav Maga for two years. She says before her training, she wasn't equipped to defend herself or her loved ones in a dangerous situation.
"I feel a lot safer, I feel a lot more confident being out in the world. I feel more confident about protecting those that I work with, that I go places with that I care about," Jones said.
Shannon Langwell, Chief Instructor at Nomad Krav Maga, says they practice mixed martial arts for the purpose of self defense.
"Our ultimate goal with Krav Maga is to end a fight as quickly as possible if that fight comes to us and we're unable to deescalate," Langwell said.
Langwell teaches situational awareness stills and how to create verbal and physical boundaries. If deescalation fails, you'll also know how to throw a punch.
"You'll learn some simple basic techniques that can really be highly effective in protecting yourself or your loved ones if that attacker ever comes to you," Langwell added.
Nomad Krav Maga is located on 5597 S. Rainbow Bulevard Suite #170.
