NEVADA (KTNV) — The Fourth of July can pose challenges for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, as explosive fireworks and firecrackers can replicate gunfire.
Doug Stepina, a VA suicide prevention coordinator, says this is a time for those with PTSD to take a step back and evaluate their mental health and determine how well they can cope over the holiday weekend.

Stepina also says having a support system is extremely important, and people should avoid lighting off fireworks at random times when those with PTSD are not expecting them.
