UPDATE JULY 13: While police initially told the press early Thursday morning that the boy shot in Wednesday's shooting passed away, they have since provided new information. Around 5:30 p.m., officials said the boy is alive and on life support at the hospital.
Police also said that they took an 11-year-old boy into custody during the incident. In addition, another juvenile may have been involved.
The incident began when a resident in the area called police because he said he noticed two teens trying to break into his neighbors home.
"I heard a bang come from outside," said the neighbor who only wanted to be identified as Jared.
Jared said he and a group of neighbors then chased the boys.
Police took that boy into custody and began searching for the others.
During their search, they came across a juvenile that was hiding. They gave chase and the boy went into a house. Police officers followed him inside and heard a gunshot shortly after. They did not return fire and retreated from the home. That is when the barricade situation began.
Several hours later, they entered the room of the house where the juvenile was and discovered he had a gunshot wound to the head. He was immediately transported to a local hospital where he is on life support.
Neighbor are hoping the boy will recover, but say their neighborhood has been plagued with burglaries for the last month.
"We went out and bought two additional layers of protection for our windows," Jared said.
Crime Mapping showed at least 9 burglaries in the neighborhood since the beginning of July. Police have not connected the boys to any other burglaries.
UPDATE AT MIDNIGHT: Las Vegas police released more information regarding this incident late Wednesday night. They said the SWAT team made entry into the home to take the suspect into custody. That is when officers learned that he sustained a gunshot wound to the head. Police believe this was self-inflicted. The suspect was rushed to Sunrise Hospital with critical injuries.
