As the holiday season approaches, package thefts are a growing concern.
Many thieves walk up to homes in broad daylight and run off with deliveries. In many cases, they know the package has just arrived because they follow delivery trucks into housing developments.
If residents are not home when it happens, there is not much to be done. But there's also not much police can do either -- short of seeing it happen.
"This is not a high priority crime," said retired Las Vegas police Lt. Randy Sutton, 13 Action News Crime and Safety expert.
But it is one that residents can prevent.
"Have it sent to someone you know will be home, or ask the delivery service to have someone sign for it," Sutton said.
Surveillance video shared on social media can also help people do their own detective work to track down the thief.
"Police do monitor social media, and there are people in the area who could also recognize the thief," Sutton said.
