LAS VEGAS (KTNV — Morning commuters will notice a heavy police presence in the south central valley Thursday morning.

Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in the area of East Harmon Avenue and Paradise Road.

Capt. Kurt McKenzie told media that officers were in the area on an unrelated stop when someone approached officers in their car. Police said that person then got out of their car armed with a knife, holding it over his head and challenging officers.

McKenzie said the officers told him to drop his weapon, but he ignored the request and charged at officers, which led to the shooting.

The person who was armed with a knife was shot and taken to a local hospital, where he is in critical condition as of Thursday morning.

No one else was injured. This is the eighth officer-involved shooting for LVMPD in 2024.

On Aug. 10, LVMPD identified the officers involved as the following:

  • Jeremy Johnson, 32, has been employed with the LVMPD since 2019. He is assigned to the Tourist Safety Division, Convention Center Area Command.
  • Jacobo Soils, 22, has been employed with the LVMPD since 2023. He is assigned to the Tourist Safety Division, Convention Center Area Command.
  • Andrew Collins, 39, has been employed with the LVMPD since 2019. He is assigned to the Tourist Safety Division, Convention Center Area Command.
  • Dominick Nelson, 26, has been employed with the LVMPD since 2023. He is assigned to the Tourist Safety Division, Convention Center Area Command.

The officers have been placed on routine paid administrative leave pending the outcome of a review of this incident.
