Metro identified the officer involved in the shooting as 27-year-old Larry Jones, who is on paid administrative leave pending a review of the incident.
The suspect involved in the shooting was identified as 68-year-old Robert Fanello. Metro said had he survived, he would have been charged with one count of Domestic Violence Battery with Substantial Bodily Harm on a Victim over 60, three counts on Assault of With a Deadly Weapon on a Police Officer and Discharging a Firearm Where a Person may be in Danger.
On Saturday around 1:52 p.m., Metro said they received a call from the Suicide Hotline. They told police they had 68-year-old Robert Fanello on the line, contacting them saying he was going to shoot himself, had been beating his wife for the past two days and that he had not slept.
LVMPD said they sent a sergeant and three officers to the 6100 block of Allen Cove Court to deescalate the situation and were advised by the hotline that Fanello was refusing to put the gun down. His wife was with him in the garage.
Arriving officers said they heard Fanello fire a gunshot from inside the residence. Allegedly, he had become impatient with how long it was taking officers to arrive.
Police said Officer Jones drew his rifle and went across the street to a house with another police officer to position themselves on the second floor overlooking the suspect's home. From there they were providing updates via radio.
As more officers arrived, Fanello came out of the house with his firearm. Metro said the responding sergeant attempted to deescalate the situation through nonlethal options, asking Fanello to drop the gun, but he would not listen.
Metro said a short time later, Officer Jones witnessed Fanello lift his firearm towards the officers attempting to speak with him. This prompted Officer Jones to shoot Fanello, wounding him.
Metro said Fanello was immediately taken into custody and medical teams took him to UMC Trauma where he was later pronounced deceased.
Fanello's wife is still in the hospital with serious injuries, according to Metro.
This is still an active investigation.
This marks the second LVMPD officer-involved shooting for 2025.
