Las Vegas police have arrested a man accused of causing suspicious burns to a baby last week.
Around 8 p.m. Sept. 30, patrol officers were dispatched to the 4600 block of Vegas Drive, near Decatur Boulevard, to investigate reports of a suspicious injury to a child.
Officers found a 1-year-old boy who had sustained serious burn to his hand and wrist. The child was transported to the University Medical Center with injuries which required surgery.
The investigation initiated by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Abuse Neglect Detail indicated that 23-year-old Amonte Taylor was watching the child while his mother was out.
Through the course of the investigation, police determined that the burns were inconsistent with an accident and Taylor was booked into the Clark County Detention Center for one count of child abuse resulting in substantial bodily harm.
According to the arrest report, Taylor placed the baby's hand into hot oil from a candle burner. Before this happened, police said the biological mother and Taylor were in an argument. The mother left her two children in Taylor's care when the injury occurred, the arrest report states.
However, when questioned by police, Taylor said the baby accidentally place his hand in the oil while Taylor was cleaning dishes, according to the arrest report.
Anybody with information regarding this case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (702) 385-5555.
