LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — A 35-year-old Las Vegas woman named Xin Liu has been arrested for reportedly throwing her 3-month-old baby from the top of a staircase, resulting in his death.

Las Vegas police say they received a 911 call on Sept. 1 and the caller said that a mother had dropped her baby and the baby was not breathing.

3-month-old Stanley Shaw was taken to University Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

A friend of the mother said the nanny called her and told her something was wrong with the baby. When she arrived at the home on Turtle Vista Circle in Spring Valley, the nanny told her she believed Liu had thrown the baby down the stairs while she was washing the baby’s clothes.

Liu then went into the kitchen and began drinking a beer and hitting her face, according to the nanny. The nanny put the baby back into the crib and called the family friend.

The father told police that Liu was excited about the baby but became depressed after the baby was born. Liu began having problems sleeping and was not eating properly. The nanny was hired to help Liu with the baby.

Liu reportedly read articles about mothers who killed their babies and then committed suicide. The family was aware of this and tried to seek medical care on separate occasions.

A friend told police that Liu may have attempted to smother the baby by placing a hand over his face in the past. Supposedly Liu “woke up” and realized she did not want to hurt the child. Liu also told the friend that she would often see ghosts and vampires or her deceased relatives in her dreams and they beckoned her to come with them. The friend also told police that she never saw Liu hurt the child and was loving towards him in her presence.

Liu was arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center on a murder charge. She is due in court on Sept. 8.
