UPDATE APRIL 30: The mug shot and arrest report for the woman accused of hitting a teenager in a marked crosswalk has been released.
Police say that Crystal Helm, 34, was driving on West Tropicana Avenue near Morris Street when her car struck the teenager.
Helm then kept driving.
An on-duty Community Ambulance immediately stopped to render aid to the pedestrian and he was transported to Sunrise Trauma, where he was pronounced deceased.
The ambulance crew was able to provide a description of the vehicle that struck the teenager and police were able to locate it as it was being loaded onto a tow truck at a Pep Boys on Tropicana Avenue.
Police were able to obtain a search warrant for the vehicle. Temporary registration papers in the vehicle identified the owner as Crystal Helm.
The tow truck driver was also able to provide police with a description of a woman who was with 2 males when he arrived to pick up the vehicle. He told police that he noticed the driver’s seat was positioned for a shorter person and the woman with the males was much shorter than the men.
Pretty soon after, a man approached police and said the driver wanted to turn herself in.
Police read the Miranda rights to Helm and asked if she wanted to talk.
Helm reportedly said that she was on the way home from buying groceries and was aware that she hit a human being. She said that she attempted to stop after the collision, but her brakes became locked. She said she was unable to stop until she was almost a mile away.
When asked why she did not call for help, she told police she was scared and did not have insurance and did not know what to do.
