Couple arrested for defrauding Nye County inmate

Posted
Two Pahrump residents were arrested after defrauding a Nye County inmate by posing as bail bond agents.

The victim, a male currently incarcerated at the Nye County Detention Center, reported that a man and a woman contacted his roommate at his home in Pahrump and pretended to be bail bond agents. The suspects convinced the roommate to turn over the inmate's cash savings of $900 and advised that they would provide bond so that the victim could be released from jail.

An investigation revealed that another inmate, 37-year-old Brian Hern, learned about the victim's cash savings and conspired with his wife, 32-year-old Crystal Hern, to defraud the victim of his money. Crystal then recruited the help of another man to pose as bail bond agents.

Brian and Crystal confessed of the fraud and were booked on grand larceny charges. Both are being held on bail for $15,000 each.

The inmate who was defrauded is incarcerated on unrelated charges and will not be identified.

Nye County police are still seeking the third individual involved in the fraud for questioning.

Anyone with information about the investigation is urged to contact the Nye County Sheriff's Office at 775-751-7000.
