LATEST: The formal announcement for a hockey team in Las Vegas is expected at Wednesday's NHL Awards.

ORIGINAL STORY:

NBA commissioner Adam Silver says there are no plans to expand, but the league is keeping an eye on Las Vegas.

Sports experts say NHL could just be the beginning.

"It's just a great place for a league to come in and not just try it out but really get their feet wet and start showing the rest of the leagues that it's possible to be successful here," says Jason Pothier, owner of sinbin.vegas.

Pothier says the leagues have done their homework, so they definitely see this is a great opportunity to come here and make money. He says this is exactly what people want.

"I know there's doubters out there that think "Las Vegas...It's not a hockey town; it's not even really a sports town. It's a commuter town. I disagree. I think we're a major sports town", he says.

Pothier says NHL, NFL and NBA would definitely have success here.

But Major League Baseball may be a bit of a struggle, given the fact that it's an outdoor sport in the summer.
